An unforgettable experience, "12 Years A Slave" is Steve
McQueen's defining entry in American film history of stories on slavery.
Few films occupy that history but Mr. McQueen's true story about New York
freeman Solomon Northup's kidnapping and enslavement is signature and singular.
We see the atrocity of enslavement through Mr. Northup's eyes, a rare
perspective.
Mr. McQueen's excellent direction captures the mechanics and textures of
slavery, its economics, complexities and the humanity that executes and is
affected by it. I've seen this film three times. Each time I've
witnessed something new, amazing and heartbreaking. I haven't even
mentioned the cast, which from top to bottom are superb, especially Chiwetel
Ejiofor, whose subtlety and range are spectacular, the memorable Lupita Nyong'o,
and Sarah Paulson. Eight Oscars to come.
Released October 2013. Rated R. Two hours 12 minutes.
Review.
