THE DEEP BLUE SEA
Beautiful, atmospheric and evocative, Terence Davies' drama about a woman
trapped between a husband in a passionless marriage and a young alcoholic Royal
Air Force pilot she admires in 1950 London shines. Based on Terence
Ratigan's classic play, "The Deep Blue Sea" most often recalls the vintage 1950s
cinematic melancholia that resonated long after the end credits rolled.
The performances in this sumptuous, intelligent work are amazing, starting with
Rachel Weisz as the conflicted woman. Ann Mitchell is also good as a
landlady, as is the ever-reliable Simon Russell Beale. Well-directed by
Mr. Davies, with impeccable cinematography by Floran Hoffmeister. The
opening ten minutes are exquisite. Released in the U.S. in March 2012.
One hour and 38 minutes. On Blu-Ray/DVD in the U.S.
